Lifting the XK engine out of a Jaguar 2.4 litre Mk1

27 January, 2024

Replacing the clutch on a Jaguar Mk 1 and 2 by lifting the engine out as opposed to dropping it out underneath.

I have seen this done a few times now by Mr Watts of Chobham, Surrey and apparently it's not a common method, so thought I would put it out there.

The Core Tools that make all the difference:

  • A good crane on wheels as opposed to a block and tackle
  • A hydraulic ramp
  • Blankets to protect paintwork

Method

Ideally on a ramp, REVERSE the car onto it.

The first steps are to remove the bonnet and take out the central console and gear lever.
Then, to disconnect the exhaust and to unmount the engine and gearbox.

Lower the ramp to the floor

The next step is to roll the car forward leaving the rear wheels only on the ramp.

Using the mobile crane, put the harness straps around the engine studs and an additional safety strap and tension the crane.

Raise the ramp very slowly so that the car is at an angle whilst maintaining the tension on the straps.

At a certain angle being very careful you can lift the entire engine and gearbox out , roll the crane forward away from the car.

Lower the car and add the new clutch and bearing.

Replace the engine and gearbox in exactly the same way at an angle and connecting the engine mounts in the first instance.

Re-attach the previously removed exhaust, central console and gear lever and bonnet.....and Bob's your Uncle
